Tour de France

Well, that was just thoroughly enjoyable… for a while there it looked like nobody wanted to win, but then through the Alp stages, Andy Schleck and Alberto Contador both challanged the field. Meanwhile, Cadel Evans was answering each challange, taking the lead of the peloton when he needed to, and while not leading, positioning himself perfectly for the time trial.

It might have been a different tour if Contador had been in better form at the start, as he seems to be the only other rider other than Evans who’s both strong in the mountains and able to ride a winning time trial.

Other impressions: I was surprised that Garmin-Cervelo won the team competition – With Andy and Frank Schleck finishing 2nd and 3rd, I’d have thought that Leopard-Trek would have had an inside track, but that doesn’t seem to be as much of a factor as I thought.

I thought it was cool that Rolland won the best new rider competition after working to keep Voeckler in the running for so long, and of course who couldn’t be impressed by the great showing of heart from Voeckler. How many times did he predict his own demise, only to carry the yellow jersey all the way to the final day in the Alps.
